One of the biggest lies that we have ever been told, as humans, is that “time heals all wounds.” We are going to take this concept and just toss it out the window. It’s a huge disservice to those of us who are working to heal and peel back the layers of our triggers and traumas. If you solely rely on time to heal, you will be sorely disappointed

Because if this was that was true, every single time we dealt with a loss, disease, trauma… it would just disappear…. with time.

But it doesn’t work that way does it?

Another deep disservice that we have been fed over and over again is that we only heal by dealing with the physical body. If that were true than dealing will dis-ease and illness would be simple, but again, this pathway is far more complex than we are lead to believe.

Now here is the big question; the question that no one thinks to ask. Why doesn’t it work? Why, with enough time or focusing on only the physical body, do all wounds and illnesses not just disappear? Let us dive into the way our bodies work and how we store memories, traumas and experiences and how disease actually develops in our bodies.

If you believe that we are simply our bodies and nothing more, that is totally cool, but it is possible that this post might not be for you. Because it is my belief and knowing that we are FAR more than just our physical bodies and therefore, how we process and store trauma and experiences is more complicated than we understand.

Let me explain.

Introducing the Layers of the Bodies

I want you to picture your body. Can you see it in all of its beautiful perfection? Now I want you to picture yourself as a nesting doll. Yes that’s right, one of those nifty little nesting dolls that your grandmother pulled out during the winter holidays.

For you see, what we are lead to believe that we are only that outer doll; that outermost layer and by navigating our health and healing through this layer that we can deal with most things thrown at us. But just like grandma’s nesting dolls, there is much more to us than meets the eye.

Physical

This is the layer of the nesting doll that we are most familiar with. We see it each day when we get dressed, shower and look in the mirror. Perhaps we see this aspect of our being reflected back to us through the eyes of our children or parents as well. This is the layer of our being that when we are angry, sick or depressed that we interact with most. In addition to what we see on the outside, our physical body is also comprised of everything under the skin from organs and skeletal systems or blood vessels and ligaments.

The biggest piece we are missing with all healing is how our body stores information and data (also called light). While much of what we experience manifests itself through our physical body, where that pain, trauma, story or data is stored may not be in the physical body at all.

In Western medicine and culture there is a lot of focus placed on this aspect of our being. Especially in avoidance of pain, discomfort and trauma.

Mental

This body encompasses all things intellectual. This includes critical and analytical thought, how we process information, how we learn new skills and how we communicate verbally. The mental body also represents our thoughts, attitudes, judgement and prejudices – essentially how we interpret the world and perceive our value/worth.

What is fascinating about the mental body comes forth when we take the time to ask where most of our thoughts, attitudes and programs come from. Are they of our own making? Or are they born from ancestral traumas or beliefs passed down through our family line or culture? No one can answer that question for you unfortunately, but the work to uncover why you believe what you believe is well worth the effort my friend.

There are some sources that state that the mental body is deeply entwined with the pineal gland, which is also the same location as our third eye. So much to unpack there and perhaps we will delve into that on another day.

Emotional

This is the realm of emotions, feelings, passions and desires that we all experience as we walk through this human existence. Through this emotional body we are able to experience intense emotions – including what we could describe as lower or higher emotions – ranging from anger, stress and fear to love, compassion and joy.

Serving as a bridge between the mental body and the physical body, this is where our experience of the world outside of ourselves is interpreted and processed. This is how we express our feelings and relationship to all things in our world.

It is through the experience known as emotion that we have that age old adage “two sides to each story”. The story itself does not oscillate or change, but how each party interprets, processes and subsequently expresses their feelings weaves the tales of the story.

Spiritual/Light Body

The spiritual body represents our connection to all things and something bigger than just us. Sounds vague now doesn’t it? In many ways it will feel vague simply due to the focus that our Western society places (or in this case) does not place it on these realms. How do you connect with yourself? The world? God? The universe and beyond? The divine or your higher self? All of these aspects are encompassed in what we call our spiritual body. In the end it truly doesn’t matter what you call it and in fact labeling it might be missing the point all together.

This is the aspect of our body that is most denied by the public at large. Much of this has to do with a lack of understanding; here in the West we often deny and refuse to acknowledge that which we do not understand.

Our spiritual body is the union of all things – our soul, life experience and our destiny, but speaks directly to your mental body. Interestingly enough, those who are in harmony with their spiritual bodies tend to feel less fear and anxiety. Instead these feelings are often replaced with those of calm, love and the belief in interconnectivity with all things.

Healing

All of this information comes down to healing. So now that we understand that we are more complicated than just simply existing as meat sacks wandering around the planet, this makes healing a bit more complicated.

However, it also makes it easier. Hear me out…

We often place the sole burden of healing on the physical body. When we try the chiropractor, the herbalist, the naturopath etc. and it doesn’t work, we just try another modality. Constantly being disappointed by the lack of outcomes.

Let me flip the script for you…

What if there was nothing wrong the the modality, but something wrong with the approach? Or perhaps instead of relying on one single tool to “heal everything”, what we need to do is understand that the approach to healing might be just as complicated as our bodies. That what we need to do is stack our approach to healing instead of relying on just one modality to solve all of our problems. Trust me, if we could heal the world by simply shoving gemstones down our shirts or taking this one single herb, I would be rich by now.

But it doesn’t work that way.

Once you understand how it does work, the picture and path towards health becomes a whole lot clearer.

The tools we have in our belts; herbs, crystals, energy healing, chiropractor, saunas; are only as good as our understanding of HOW our bodies work. How they store and work with the energies of our experiences.

Example of a Healing Session

Have you ever had a massage or Reiki treatment before? You feel great afterwards but the feeling never lasts does it? It is not because there is something wrong with the modality. Instead we have to ask, did a layer of the dis-ease, trauma or challenge you are currently dealing with get left behind?

When we only deal with the physical realm of our body, we can feel stuck in our healing journey. How many times have you hit a plateau, not really knowing what the next step was, but knowing for sure there was one? This is why it can be important to stack our healing sessions and access multiple avenues of health. Understanding what the root of our issue is can go a long way to provide true and lasting healing. For example, if the root of your dis-ease is from ancestral trauma, it is possible that no matter how hard you work to heal your body, if you do not address the trauma experienced through your lineage, you may be missing a key piece to the puzzle.

Stacking is when we tackle a problem using multiple modalities. This could include herbal therapies, yoga, trauma counselling, shamanic sessions, grounding and a handful a supplements, as just one example. Understanding the multi-dimensionality nature of who we are allows us to explore health from a whole new perspective.

This is a huge subject that could take multiple posts to really and truly understand. For today I simply wanted to offer you a new perspective on who you truly are and how we can evolve our paradigms of healing and health.

In holistic health,
