In many ways, we are just scratching the surface of our understanding of the human body. Our ancient ancestors had deep knowledge of the spiritual and energetic systems of the body (which I will discuss below), that most current day medical practitioners are not versed in. Fast forward to the modern age of medicine which has come far in its biological understanding of the physical operating of the body. No longer do we drill holes in people’s heads to let “the devil” out! But now we are in a time where those two systems are merging, an age where healing is not only thought of as merely a physical undertaking, but a whole body journey. Mind, body and spirit.
Please know that this blog post will work under the assumption that humans are made up of far more than just the physical body. If this does not fit into your paradigm of humanity, health, or spirituality; I respect that and wish you well on your journey of discovery and growth.
If this resonates with you and fits into your framework, let’s dive in!
What is a Charka?
Ancient cultures all over the globe have terms for the energetic essence of the human body. You may have heard of some of them; chi, prana, life force, mana, ki, orenda and so many more. As you delve into the spiritual paths of the world, you realize we are far more connected than you ever thought possible. How could cultures who had never met, as we are told, have similar ways of viewing this human existence? That, my friends, is a story for another day.
Chakras are energy centres within the human body that help regulate all of its processes; from physical to emotional. While there are hundreds of chakras, the focus in this post will be the main seven; starting at the root and ending at the crown.
Anodea Judith, the world’s leading chakra expert, defines them as “organizational centers for the reception, assimilation, and transmission of life energy.”
Moving forward, it is important to understand that humans are energetic beings. All living things on this planet are comprised of and created by energy. And your body’s ability to function in an optimal fashion comes down to the health of your energy centres. This is what keeps you psychologically, energetically, emotionally, and physically balanced.
The term chakra is Sanskrit for “wheel” and comes from the prana system found in the ancient Indian texts known as the Vedas. This term is used because the life force (prana/chi etc.), that moves inside and through you is constantly spinning and rotating; like a wheel.

What Are the Seven Main Energy Centres
There are entire texts and tomes written on the concept of chakras and how they function in the body. For simplicities sake, I am going to cover just the very basics. For each chakra I will go over the location of it and its associated colour, which areas it governs and what it feels like if it is either overactive or underactive. For more detailed information, please check out the links above and continue to explore in your own way.

- Underactive: Means you live firmly in the human world and lack any connection to your own conscious energy an the energy to the universe
Please note that none of these states of overactive or underactive should be described in terms of positive or negative; good or bad. They simply are. We are all on our own unique journeys in this human existence, with our own struggles, triumphs, and epiphanies. Do not beat yourself up if you do meet a particular standard that you have set for yourself… instead look at this as opportunities to grow and delve into what might be holding you back.
What Does an Energetic Block Feel Like?
Moving forward we understand that our physical bodies are deeply connected and could not exist without the energetic body. If you believe that our human experience is about evolution and growth, an energetic blockage is something that prevents or stifles that growth. This, if left unchecked for long periods of time, has the ability to manifest into a dis-ease state within the body. In these cases, a long term energetic blockage or imbalance will feel a lot like an illness or chronic health condition.
However, this process takes time to reach the physical dis-ease state. In the beginning it could feel like a fogginess, the inability to concentrate or focus, stiffness or discomfort in certain parts of the body, irritability and so on. It can also express itself in a feeling of being stuck, repeating the same patterns over and over again and negative self talk. As each person is unique, their response to an energetic imbalance will also be unique.
In fact, if you have ever done any reading on Bach Flower remedies, you will know that the creator of that line of energetic essences believed this very notion. That physical illness is the manifestation of an emotional/energetic imbalance in the body. Specifically, according to Dr. Bach, illness is a result of a person who is neglecting their true life path and purpose in life.
Blockages or stagnation can occur when we resist the lesson(s) that we need in order to experience a leap in our growth or evolution. Why would we resist a lesson? There are many reasons and only you can answer that for yourself and your own personal journey, but they can be (but are not limited to):
- In inability to accept that we have anything to learn or change about ourselves
- The events in our life trigger feelings within us that we are not willing to deal with
- The shadow aspects of ourselves (the darker thoughts etc.) are areas we are not willing to delve into
- A great example would be the root of eating disorders, self harm behaviours or chronic negative thought patterns
- The external blaming of our problems on outside forces and an unwillingness to look at our role in our own unhappiness or dissatisfaction in life
How Chakra Blockages and Imbalances Can Lead to Dis-Ease
Please note that while the field of quantum mechanics, quantum physics and alternative healing therapies are making huge leaps in terms of finding scientific evidence to back up these claims, most of what we are discussing here is currently theoretical and/or based on thousands of years of anecdotal evidence.
As a side note, due to the paradigm constraints that the modern scientific method has, it is possible that we may never be able to satisfy those parameters for “proof” or “evidence”. How can a method that is based in traditional physics and ways of thinking result in proof of something that is denied within the very framework of their beliefs? Basically, if they do not believe it to be true, how can we accept their models for proof as accurate? Gives you something to ponder doesn’t it?
So back to the main discussion, theoretically, how does an energetic imbalance, blockage or sluggish movement manifest into illness or disease.
At its basic form, all matter exists as energy and that energy vibrates. As an example, we know that certain colours hold different vibrations and frequencies (also called wavelengths). When functioning optimally, each chakra holds a particular energetic frequency and vibration.
When our chakras are no longer in balance, their energetic resonance changes, either through being underactive or overactive. If this is for a relatively short period of time, the body can easily compensate. However, if this energetic vibration and frequency is disrupted for long period of time (chronic states), it will start to affect the surrounding areas in the body, changing their frequencies as well. Eventually this leads to something we are all familiar with – inflammation.
Is it possible that inflammation is caused due to energetic imbalances within the body? Our modern scientific discoveries tell us that the root of all dis-ease and illness states is inflammation. If both statements are held to be true, than the true root of dis-ease is a disharmony within the energetic body and not the physical.
People do not simply jump from a healthy state to chronic heart disease, as an example. These conditions build slowly over time (often decades), starting as inflammation in the arteries and veins. But what if it started before that? What if it started as an energetic imbalance in the body that was never resolved and then over time it manifested into the physical state we call inflammation?
