I got this really wicked list come up in my Facebook feed today by Small FootPrint Family. And while the list does rock, they are all American. And there ain’t nothing wrong with that if you are live there, but I do not and my family strives to support local whenever we can.
So I decided to make my own list of great little seed companies us Canadian folk can support. The little blurbs about the companies are taken directly from their websites.
Here goes nothing!
Note: If I miss any comment below and I will happily add them to my blog/list.

Not Canadian but a Minnesota-based homesteader living close to the Canadian border. High integrity, good quality, open-pollinated seeds. Jackie Clay is long-time homesteader and writer for a popular homesteading magazine.
https://seedtreasures.com/
I also prefer to support small family-farm type seed savers and growers in Canada. However, I have learnt much from Jackie over the years through her homesteading articles. and she is very transparent and open through her blog.
She and her husband Will offer high quality, open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds and are also worth supporting.
Thank you so much for all of your links and information! Invaluable 🙂
My pleasure! Thanks so much for posting this list. I also like West Coast Seeds, Heritage Harvest Seeds, and Salt Spring Island seeds as they are all high quality and good companies.
I prefer to support the small family farm-type savers and growers as what they do to save and offer seeds is invaluable to all of us.
My favorites include the three I posted: Harmonic Herbs/Norseed, Prairie Garden Seeds, and Casey’s Tomatoes. They attend our local Seedy Saturday event each year and have the longest lineups of all the vendors. Folks are willing to wait 45 minutes in lineups to get seeds and talk to these folks, who freely and happily share a lot of gardening wisdom. All are high integrity people, high integrity companies, with good quality seeds.
Just a note of encouragement — Casey’s Tomatoes website is terrible but the catalogue is a wonderful mine of information. Jeff Casey is obsessed with tomatoes. Each tomato listed in the catalogue comes with its own story, detailed description, suggestions, and other information. The catalogue is online only but well worth reading.
Although not Canadian, Seed Treasures is in Minnesota about an hour from the Canadian border and also worth supporting. Jackie Clay and her husband Will are lifelong homesteaders and their seeds are also high quality. Jackie is very transparent on her blog and reading their seed catalogue (and blog) is like chatting with an old friend across the kitchen table over coffee. Lots of suggestions and wisdom posted in their catalogue too.
Two helpful places to find lists of Canadian seeds companies, many of them the small farm or garden-type producers is:
https://seeds.ca/diversity/seed-catalogue-index (Seeds of Diversity supports open-pollination and seed saving. Each company listing specifies location, contact information and website links, if available.)
http://smallfarmcanada.ca/2017/2018-seed-buying-guide/ (Small Farm Canada is a magazine that puts out an annual list of reputable Canadian seed companies, many small producers listed.)
(Sorry for all the posts — as you can tell this topic is one I am very enthusiastic about!)
I am a unique rare and endangered heirloom seed company called Garden Faerie Botanicals. I have started to collect short-season varieties that will do well In Canada. gardenfaeriebotanicals.ca
I suggest Seeds of the Revolution! by Saanich Organics in BC. Organic farmers working together since 2002. We use our varieties ourselves and only grow the best open pollinated varieties that have proven themselves on our farms!
Thanks for your suggestion!
